Appeal to Amnesty International, Human Rights
Watch, international human rights organisations
and Governments to secure the release of Mr.
Mohammed Said al-Omar in Syria.
Unofficial information has been received from
the Adra Central Prison in Damascus: Mr.
Mohammed Said al-Omar, member of the Leading
Committee of the Kurdish Azadi Party who has
been detained by the Syrian authorities since
26.10.2008, has had a stroke whilst in prison
and been taken to Ibn al-Nafis hospital in
Damascus as a result of paralysis on the left
side.
We, the Kurdish Co-ordinating Committee in Syria
call upon the international community and human
rights organizations to bring local and
international pressure on the Syrian regime for
his release. When he had the stroke in prison he
was not given medical attention, and once in
hospital his family were not given access to
him. We believe that his health has been
deliberately neglected and his life has been put
at risk due to the lack of health care for those
detained in Syrian prisons.
Mr. Mohammed Said al-Omar worked as an engineer
and was given housing as a part of his
employment in Romelan town. He has not been
charged with any offence, but his family has now
been evicted from their home and his wages have
been stopped.
Mr. Mohammed Said al-Omars detention comes
during the escalating wave of repression,
arrests and restrictions on our freedom and the
tightening grip on the Kurdish people in Syria.
It co-incides with the introduction of Decree 49
issued on 10/9/2008. This legislation gives
control regarding ownership of property in the
border areas to the security services, making a
clear distinction between the Kurdish areas and
other parts of the country.
A racist document written on 3 November 2008 and
circulated recently by the Baath Party is
designed to increase the pressure on Kurds,
restricting their livelihood and keeping a
vicious grip of control through the recent
arrests, the prevention of travel for
recreational activities, and the relocation of
Kurdish employees to distant parts of the
country. This document is a clear message that
the authorities are controlling the demise of
Kurdish people.
In the international community Syria prides
itself on the ways in which it reflects the
multiplicity and diversity of national, cultural
and religious characteristics of Syrian society,
and its recognition of others. In practice, the
Baath Party plans and implements rules and
legislation that are designed to remove the
basic human rights of Kurds, and to encourage
the demise of our society.
We call for an end to Syrian nationalism that
has increased the persecution of Kurds through
oppressive practices; for an end to arrests and
political sanctions; and for the urgent release
of all prisoners of conscience including Mr
Mohammed Said al-Omar.
